  • Majority of us have travel bucket lists. Our dream travels have urged us to work more and to earn more to reach our dream destinations. Others want to reach every Asian country; others want to go to Europe and many more.

But would you travel across the world by bus? It seems an exciting thought, right?

There is a certain expedition company in India called “Adventures Overland” organizes a bus trip from the heart of India, Delhi to the United Kingdom capital, London.

It is a bus ride that will carry 20 travelers and ferry them overland to 18 countries, which is about 20,000 kilometres, in 70 days, no air travels involved. The trip will course through India, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, Belgium, all the way to London, UK.

This expedition will take place in the middle of 2021, just waiting for the pending travel restrictions made the COVID-19 pandemic. The best time to take a trip to these countries are April to June in order that weather conditions will be favorable to travelers.

The trip, which is divided into four legs, will cost a traveler $20,000, inclusive of 10 visas. A passenger can choose whether to start in UK or in India.

The bus features a business class seat with adjustments and ample legroom, individual entertainment system with AUX and USB port, bottle and cup holder and partition between seats to maintain privacy. There will be also a foldable tray for food and laptop while having work on board. There is ample storage for laptop bags, handbags, and snacks as well as private locker for the storage of some valuable items. The bus is also equipped with wi-fi connection, first aid kits, fire extinguisher and multiple emergency exit points.

According to its history, this expedition was inspired with the “Hippie Trail” buses in the middle of 1950’s and 1960s. It is with the most popular and the first trip in 1957 organized by Oswald-Joseph Garrow-Fisher, in a bus named “The Indiaman.” It began to travel with 20 passengers departing from London on April 15 and reached Kolkata on June 5. The same bus has returned London on August 2. The bus traveled through France, Italy, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, and Pakistan before finally reaching India.

The Adventures Overland was founded the travelers and became entrepreneurs Sanjay Madan and Tushar Agarwal from India.

Aside from its deep history, Agarwal said on a CNN interview, this bus ride was also inspired by his own travel experience from London to Delhi in 2010, saying that it was an absolute fantastic journey.

First, the two entrepreneurs had organized three India-London expeditions where travelers bought their sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and drive in convoy. But, they have also learned that there are some travelers who want to experience overland journeys but don’t want to drive that long. “So, we came up with the idea of putting together a bus in which people can sit comfortably and go on long distance journeys. And that’s how the idea of the Bus to London was born,” they said.

“This is a tried and tested route, it’s designed to be as safe as possible, adding that local guides also join the party as each border is crossed to assist with travel logistics,” Agarwal added.

This kind of travel, according to the two, should be participated with an open mind and open heart. “It’s a life-changing journey, something that people will always remember, and they will cherish it forever.”
