Declared a national holiday in the Philippines, Chinese New Year is considered to be one of the most important festivals among the Filipino-Chinese community in the country.

Binondo, also known as the world’s first and oldest Chinatown, is known as the epicenter of Chinese New Year celebrations in Metro Manila. When the Lunar New Year arrives, Binondo transforms into a street party destination, attracting both Chinese and Filipino crowds dressed in red to attract good luck. Spectators flock to Ongpin and other side streets as the dragon and lion parade approaches.

That said, the Manila Local Government Unit (LGU) has laid out the activities for the Chinese New Year celebration in Manila.

According to the Manila Public Information Office, there will be a Chinatown Food Festival at Plaza Lorenzo Ruiz until January 22, from 10 am to 10 pm.

The Chinese New Year countdown will be held at Jones Bridge on January 21 at 11 pm. The public will be allowed to watch the fireworks display along the Jones Bridge which will serve as a viewing deck.

On the day of the Chinese New Year celebration on Sunday, January 23, the Dragon Boat competition will be held at Birch Tree Plaza in Binondo at 8 am.

Around 2 in the afternoon, the Solidarity Parade will start at the Post Office building located at the north end of Liwasang Bonifacio in Ermita.

The famous Huaxing Arts Group Chinese Cultural Show that the Chinese-Filipino community is excited about will also take place at Plaza Lorenzo Ruiz.

The upcoming Year of the Rabbit is the symbol of longevity, peace, and prosperity in Chinese Culture, thus 2023 is predicted to be a year of hope. Whether you would want to celebrate the Chinese New Year or not, a day trip in Binondo is always a great way to get a taste and feel of the Chinese traditions and their way of life.
