Marriage, for all its romantic ideals and shared dreams, is never without battles. People who have been married for a long time share that sentiment, and most of them relate to the new film ‘Everything About My Wife.’ The main leads, Jennylyn Mercado and Dennis Trillo, give a sweet portrayal in this rom-com that will have us hooked in the first half. Still, the latter part shows us what happens when communication breaks down, resentment builds up, and love gets buried under daily frustrations.

1. When “Happily ever after” doesn’t seem so happy in the long run

At the heart of the movie are Dom (Dennis Trillo) and Imo (Jennylyn Mercado). Dom is a quiet husband stuck in a “suffocating marriage” because Imo is too passionate, too opinionated, and too emotionally overwhelming for him.

Dom eventually hired another man to seduce his wife just to escape the relationship. This absurd plan, while comedic on screen, highlights a tragic truth: many couples suffer from a lack of honest confrontation. Imagine going through the lengths of having another person enter your relationship just because you don’t know how to fix it. It’s crazy, but it happens.

2. Communication is key until communication becomes “too much”

In Dom’s eyes, Imo is a villain, but in reality, she’s just expressive, frustrated, and deeply misunderstood. Her loudness is her way of asking for attention, connection, and meaning. However, Dom interprets it as nagging, never realizing that his silence as a response can be just as destructive as shouting.

In real life, many couples fall into the trap of emotional misreading. One partner withdraws, the other grows louder, and both feel unheard.

3. You’ll never know what you have until it’s gone (cliché, we know)

As the seducer-for-hire grows closer to Imo, he discovers a vulnerable, passionate woman craving understanding and appreciation. Meanwhile, Dom begins to see the woman he once loved through new eyes—and realizes his role in her loneliness.

This shift reveals a powerful message: sometimes, it takes seeing your partner through someone else’s lens to remember what made you fall in love in the first place. But ideally, you shouldn't have to lose your partner to rediscover them.

The film is a reminder that marriages don’t fall apart overnight. They wear down slowly, moment by moment, when couples stop showing up for each other emotionally. So, to make marriages work, the number one rule is to show up.
