The Keys to the City: How rating potlucks on TikTok forced people to cook better
September 7, 2025

You’ve probably heard the phrases “The keys to the city!” and “The pear of anguish for you and your lawyer!” on TikTok by now. Spearheaded by creators like @shaiie_foeva, the trend of rating potlucks has transformed casual food gatherings into culinary showdowns. These videos often feature TikTok users filming the dishes they brought for potlucks, and of course, Shaiie’s reactions have turned her into a sort of unofficial mayor of Potluck TikTok.

But behind the humor lies an unexpected side effect: people are actually cooking better.

As the trend gained traction, viewers began to realize their food might end up judged. This awareness has pushed everyday cooks to level up. From upgraded presentation (no more foil trays!) to actually making the food, there’s a noticeable shift in quality content.

It’s part performance, part peer pressure, but entirely rooted in community. TikTok’s potluck rating trend has turned potlucks into a viral incentive to care more about taste, about presentation, and not being the weak link in the dinner spread

In short, TikTok did what no office memo ever could: it made the potluck competitive and more delicious.
