Stepping into the role: What makes a great stepfather?
Stepping into the role: What makes a great stepfather?
June 16, 2026

In a family-centric country like the Philippines, many people dream of having a perfect family. However, this idea is often just an ideal. Family dynamics nowadays are diverse, and families come in different forms, sizes, and environments. One example is a blended family.

A blended family, also known as stepfamily, is formed when two individuals build a life together while bringing children from their previous relationships into the family. Living in this type of family may not always be easy for children, especially those who remain closely attached to their biological parents. The same may be true for a stepfather. However, like any relationship, meaningful connections are built through time, trust, and communication.

Becoming a stepfather requires a great deal of perseverance, patience, and effort to build a sincere, genuine, and loving relationship with one’s stepchildren. Taking on the role of a stepfather does not simply mean acting as a replacement for a biological father. Rather, it means stepping up to care for, guide, and support the children as if they were one’s own.

Many prominent personalities come from blended families. Some examples include KC Concepcion and his stepfather, Senator Kiko Pangilinan; and Luis Manzano and his stepfather, acting Executive Secretary Ralph Recto.

This Father’s Day, let us also acknowledge the father figures who chose to step up for us. Doing so does not diminish the role of biological fathers; rather, it helps provide children with additional love, guidance, and support. After all, fatherhood goes beyond blood, it is defined by unwavering commitment, care, and presence.
