P-Pop group SB19 has taken on a new role beyond music after being named the Philippines’ newest tourism ambassadors by the Department of Tourism (DOT) on July 26.
The appointment comes at a significant point in the group’s international career, shortly before they made history as the first Filipino act to perform at Lollapalooza in Chicago. SB19 brought their P-pop sound to the prestigious festival on July 30, delivering a 10-song, hour-long set that opened with the message, “From the Philippines to the world.”
The group’s Lollapalooza set included ‘DAM,’ which topped the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart, as well as the viral hit ‘Gento.’ They also performed ‘Lawless,’ their newest single, which was released just hours before their historic festival appearance.
Ahead of their international activities, the DOT sent SB19 a ‘Galingbayan’ box as a send-off gift. Inspired by the traditional balikbayan box used by Filipinos overseas to send goods home to their loved ones, the package served as a nod to the group’s role in representing the country abroad.
“Representing the Philippines on and off the stage. We’re proud to begin this new chapter as the Philippines’ newest tourism ambassadors. From the Philippines to the world!” SB19 shared on social media.
The DOT is expected to collaborate with the group on future campaigns and initiatives promoting Philippine destinations, culture, and heritage. Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay previously revealed that two P-pop acts would be tapped as tourism ambassadors, with BINI announced earlier this month.
SB19’s appointment also coincides with their growing international reach, positioning the group and their global fanbase as potential bridges between Filipino culture and audiences around the world.
