On July 8, 2025, Filipino P Pop group BINI appeared on the YouTube channel People Vs Food and sampled some of the most iconic Filipino street foods such as kwek kwek, taho, isaw, betamax, balut, hopiang baboy, and others. Some members hesitated or expressed dislike toward dishes like betamax and isaw.

As the video gained traction, the public response were split as some netizens accused them of being “maarte,” elitist, and even painting them as “K-Pop wannabes.” They argued that the girls’ reactions toward the food were too much and made them seem out of touch.

Others pointed out that preferences are personal, that the video was edited to highlight reactions, and even pointed out that BINI did enjoy the other snacks. Some commented that their authentic reactions don’t make them less of a Pinoy.

The debate brought out both criticism and solidarity, encouraging fans and critics alike to consider where personal taste ends and cultural representation begins.
