No more license confiscation: LTO implements new rules for traffic violations
No more license confiscation: LTO implements new rules for traffic violations
February 4, 2026

Good news, motorists! The days of surrendering your plastic card on the side of the road are officially over. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has ordered the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to stop the physical confiscation of driver’s licenses during traffic apprehensions.

This major policy shift, triggered in part by public outcry over rigid deadlines during the holiday season, aims to make traffic enforcement more humane and efficient. Instead of taking your license, enforcers will now place your record under an "alert status" in the LTO system.

Perhaps the best part for busy drivers is the updated settlement rule: you now have 15 working days to settle your fines, rather than 15 calendar days. This means weekends and holidays no longer count against your deadline, giving you a fair shot at resolving violations without rushing to a closed office.

This policy is believed to have a fair balance both for the authority and drivers. It's more convenience for the driver, but strict accountability through digital tracking. Drive safe!
