Every day, we hear about road accidents happening not just in the Philippines, but around the world. From heartbreaking stories like the recent NAIA parking accident that left a child dead, to the tragic SCTEX bus crash caused by a sleepy driver, these incidents remind us that road safety is no small matter. Whether you're behind the wheel or simply crossing the street, staying safe on the road is everyone’s responsibility.

So, who’s to blame? Is it the driver, the system, or the rules that aren’t strictly followed? In truth, it’s a mix of all these factors. But the first step to prevention always starts with the individual. The driver holds the greatest responsibility, as they control the vehicle. A small mistake can have huge consequences—so alertness, discipline, and basic driving etiquette are a must.

Driving is no joke. Before getting behind the wheel, one must truly know how to operate a vehicle. That means not just knowing how to start or stop, but understanding how to handle emergencies, drive in different weather conditions, and share the road with others. Getting proper driving lessons and enough practice is key before hitting busy streets or highways.

Before starting a trip, make it a habit to check your vehicle. Are the brakes working? Is there enough gas? Are your lights and signals functioning? These quick checks can save lives. While on the road, always follow traffic signs, avoid distractions like texting, and never drive when you’re feeling tired or under the influence.

Passengers also play a role in safety. Wear your seatbelt, avoid distracting the driver, and speak up if you notice anything unsafe. Pedestrians and cyclists, on the other hand, should stay alert, use crosswalks, and make themselves visible—especially at night.

At the end of the day, road safety is about respect—for life, for the rules, and for one another. Travel is meant to bring joy, not tragedy. So, wherever you’re headed next, let safety be your constant travel companion.
