The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced a significant relief measure for Metro Manila commuters, implementing a 50% fare discount for all passengers of the MRT-3 and LRT-2 starting March 23, 2026. This initiative follows a directive from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. aimed at mitigating the financial impact of rising fuel prices caused by ongoing global conflicts.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez stated that the move is part of the government's effort to ease the burden on the Filipino people. By halving the cost of rail travel, officials hope to encourage motorists to leave their vehicles at home, thereby reducing their daily spending on fuel while easing road congestion.

The discount is applicable to all riders. Passengers using "Blue" Beep cards will see the discount applied automatically, while those without cards can purchase single-journey tickets at the reduced rate. Importantly, the existing 50% discount for "White" Beep card holders—which includes senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and students—will remain in full effect.

The DOTr is also in coordination with the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) to explore the possibility of implementing similar discounts for the LRT-1. These subsidized fares will remain in place until further notice.
