Pop star Britney Spears was briefly detained by police on suspicion of driving under the influence near Los Angeles on Wednesday night. According to reports, the 44-year-old singer was taken into custody by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities said Spears was arrested and booked on suspicion of DUI. Sheriff records show that she was released from custody early Thursday morning at around 6:07 AM local time. A court appearance for the case has been scheduled for May 4.

In a statement shared with entertainment outlet Deadline, a representative for Spears called the situation “an unfortunate incident.” The representative added that the singer plans to cooperate with the legal process and take the proper steps moving forward.

Spears became one of pop music’s biggest stars in the late 1990s with hits like 'Toxic.' In recent years, she has stepped back from music and focused more on her personal life following the end of her conservatorship in 2021.
