Pop superstars Rihanna and Lady Gaga were both nominated for Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 12.

Rihanna performed ‘Lift Me Up’ from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, while Lady Gaga performed ‘Hold My Hand’ from Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick.

Dressed in a babydoll top sewn with diamonds, black pants, and leather gloves, Rihanna sang with a backing band while standing atop a grassy platform.

Dedicated to all who participated in the film and most importantly, a tribute to Chadwick Boseman, ‘Lift Me Up’ is Rihanna’s first single after a long drought of new material being released.

Meanwhile, Lady Gaga went makeup-free and donned a casual look with a dark T-shirt and jeans for the performance. She also mentioned that she crafted ‘Hold My Hand’ in her basement studio.

The nomination marked seven-time Grammy winner Rihanna’s first from the Academy. On the other hand, Lady Gaga won in the same category for ‘Shallow’ back in 2019.

However, it was ‘Naatu Naatu’ from RRR that won the Oscar for Best Original Song.

He wrote the award-winning song ‘Naatu Naatu’ for the Bollywood blockbuster RRR and has already had great success during the 2023 awards season, winning best song at both the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards.

Moreover, this year’s nominees included ‘Applause’ from Tell It Like a Woman, Diane Warren, Ludwig Göransson, M. M. Keeravani, Rahul Sipligunj, and ‘This Is A Life’ from Everything Everywhere All at Once, with David Byrne, Son Lux, and Mitski rounding out the list.
