Karencitta enters Def Jam Philippines, releases new single ‘BLOW!’

  “EVOLVED, YET HUMANIZED”

  Karencitta officially signed with Def Jam Records Philippines, an affiliate label of Universal Music Group Philippines, Inc. The record label is home to world-class performers such as Rihanna, Jay-Z, Justin Bieber, and Ludacris – to name a few.

  The singer and the agency stand on the common belief of authenticity; as the “Cebuana” singer puts it, “Authenticity is the catalyst of business.” More so, she stressed that Def Jam truly believed and invested in her vision – which boosted her entrepreneurial spirit. She added, “They (Def Jam Records PH) are forward-thinkers with strong work ethics, as well as transparent, collaborative, and family-driven.” Signing into the label will not only makes her work more significant by making her roots reach across the globe but because she wishes to be “evolved, yet humanized.”

  For more than the past three decades, Def Jam Records is dedicated to creating quality, innovative, and imaginative music. In 2019, the UMG sub-label made a venture into the Southeast Asian music scene – seeking to foster the ever-evolving hip-hop culture that continues to impact the industry as time passes by.

  To launch the career venture as well, the 27-year-old performer recently put out a Sinulog-inspired track “BLOW!” as her debut single as a Def Jam artist.

  In her usual girlboss and witty element, the song is an anthem of women’s empowerment; it talks of how women can achieve goals while staying true to themselves – AUTHENTICITY. Karencitta takes inspiration from everyday encounters, including the dark aspects of being in the industry – such as hate speech and the infamous “bashers.” She quoted, “You need to face life with a bring-it-on attitude. Having agency and freedom is the best feeling in the world! We should encourage young girls to sit down in the leader’s seat, too!”

  Karencitta (born Karen Ann Cabrera) is a Cebu and Los Angeles-based hip-hop singer-songwriter who started doing YouTube covers and remixes in 2009 and eventually catapulted to fame with her hit songs “Cebuana” (2017) and “No Apology (Wala Ako Paki)” (2018), to name a few. She also made appearances in the Hollywood scene, in series such as “How To Get Away With Murder” (2014), “Grey’s Anatomy” (2014), and “Superstore” (2015).
